Celebrating Pride Month During the pandemic
Pride month is usually a time to gather, march, commemorate, and celebrate. It’s an important time for
the LGBTQ+ community and their allies to connect, raise awareness, further the cause of anti-
discrimination, and raise funds for charities. So, what does Pride look like in a pandemic where you may
have to practise social distancing? In addition, how can you still support your LGBTQ+ community if
you don’t want to attend in-person gatherings?
Support grassroots and community events.
From drag queen-hosted quizzes to dance classes, karaoke to panel discussions and much more, the LGBTQ+ community has a variety online events worth participating in. Check out Pride websites in your city or national organizations to find out what’s happening.
Contribute to fundraisers
For many people, Pride might be a big party—but it also serves an important function in raising funds for LGBTQ+ charities. These groups do the important work of advocacy, health work, and legal advice. Many look after at-risk youth, and campaign for LGBTQ+ rights across the globe. You can find out more about what your local charities are doing for Pride by visiting their websites or following them on social media.
Social distancing
Some Pride events will be taking place in-person; however, it may mean social distancing rules are in effect during these events. Social distancing is important to stop the spread of COVID-19 and to protect those who are particularly at risk. Follow organizer guidelines, such as wearing a mask and keeping 6 feet apart from other event-goers. If you feel uncomfortable with the social distancing measures put in place, or if you see others not respecting social distancing measures, remember that it’s not rude to excuse yourself and leave the event. There are many ways to celebrate and support Pride events, but keeping yourself safe should be your first priority.
What allies can do
If you’re not part of the LGBTQ+ community but want to show your support as an ally, here are some
ways you can, during Pride month and beyond:
While you may find it disappointing that Pride may not happen in-person this year, or that you will have
to rethink taking part in some face-to-face activities, there are lots of ways to get involved through art,
culture, digital events, and community. Going online also means it’s easier to share experiences and
celebrate with members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies who are in remote locations or who
have disabilities that would otherwise prevent them from attending face-to-face events. It’s also a
chance to connect with people from all over the world, who you would have not had the chance too
before.
